Recruiting Mentors
Current International PhD Students in
BSD, Humanities, IME, PSD, & SSD

Did you have a hard time getting around, finding a grocery store or navigating the CTA when you first arrived in Chicago? Was it challenging to find social outlets for making new friends and connecting with peers? Did you wish there were someone to turn to for suggestions on where to find a decent cup of coffee in Hyde Park or how to use the library printing system?

If you are willing to share your experiences, knowledge, and expertise while developing leadership skills and strengthening the international community at UChicago, we hope you will consider joining the International Mentor Program for Academic and Cultural Transitions (IMPACT) for the 2018-19 academic year!

Starting April 1st, IMPACT is recruiting current PhD mentors. Mentors help support incoming international PhD students in BSD, Humanities, IME, PSD, & SSD , as they adjust to life in Chicago during their first year.

Mentor expectations:

  • Commit to being a mentor for the 2018 - 2019 academic year
  • Connect with your mentee on a regular basis
  • Participate in OIA’s IMPACT Program Events
    • Past events have included outings at Lagunitas Brewing, the Art Institute After Dark, the Chicago Blues Festival, scavenger hunts downtown and more!
  • Attend the Mentor Training Workshop on June 6nd*
    • This workshop is an opportunity to meet other mentors over breakfast as well as review expectations and discuss common questions about being a mentor
